MecGar 18 Round 9mm Magazines |
|
I just ordered some of these from Arizona Gun Runners. Pistol Gear was out (that's still my first go to place to buy XD accessories)
I've been reading about them on the XD forum and wanted to give them a try. It looks like they are 5/8 inch longer than the standard 16 rounders from SA and about the same price. I figured I'd better get some more high capacity magazines while I could.
I've read of some issues in early model XD's with them hanging up on the mag release and not dropping free. I may have one of the XD's that this applies to and I'll let you know.

Received the mags today. They look to be of very high quality.
I tried them in my XD and noted that they do not drop free. The same problem listed here: http://www.xdtalk.com/forums/hs2000-sa-xd-accessories/92448-mec-gar-how-mag-drop.html
OK. Only problem is, the empty mag doesnt drop free without pulling it out of the gun.
The last 3/4" or so into the gun when inserting the mag is noticeably tighter.
I did some fiddling and found out the new mag sits tight against the metal trigger block thing (sorry, i dont know what its called, its the biggest chunk of metal in the frame) which prevents it from dropping free.
There are a few easy ways to remedy this:
1) Remove a teeny bit off the metal block thing.
2) Sand some plastic out of the upper part of the magwell
OR,
3) instead of Fing up your gun, you can sand the pretty black **** off the magazine itself.
I went with the latter. Using a dremel sanding drum on low speed, I carefully and evenly sanded the top .5"-.75" of the mag, fore and aft. (the front and back.
I finished with some 320 grit sandpaper by hand, and tomorrow will clean it up with 600gr. I went a little further than just the finish, i probly took off a very small layer of metal as well. Your results may vary, usethis info at your own risk.
NOW MY MAGS DROP FREE
Read the above, spend 5 minutes with your gun, and its super simple.
It sounds like it's a problem with earlier generation XDs (like mine). I had read all the posts about potential issues on XD Talk before I ordered, so it's no surprise. I'll need to check it on Ladyjacks XD and see if it drops free on hers.
I love the extra capacity and if it just takes a little time with a dremel to fix, that's no big deal to me. Again, the mags definitely appear to be high quality. I'll update once I've worked on one of them.
